After Life

I’ve read a hundred stories, and lived a hundred more

I stumble through the chapters, every page a door

Some go on forever, like a phoenix’ song

And some are short and sweet, never running long

The best part of the story is the part that hurts the worst

When you’ve been invested, diving in headfirst

We’ve become entangled, hearts caught up like string

Never want to reach the page that closes everything

Even when the story drags on farther than it should

The prose has become broken, the words misunderstood

It only takes two words to say, but a life to comprehend

The hardest part of living life is when we reach “The End”

I knew back when I started

That the end of days

Has always been as charted

There was no other way

I know there is no heaven

Awaiting in the sky

I know without question

That Heaven’s in your eyes

I dream the days, all gone too soon, And hope you will remember

The Museum we disgraced that June, The concerts last September

A treehouse mouse and Kraken Bay, And Pinball by the pier

Bellydances and stolen glances, Adventures far and near

The years were celestial, The nights were paradise

We would be ridiculous, Laughing ‘til sunrise

But all of that was a heaven ago, and now it’s purgatory

I’ve put off way too long the ending of the story

Even when the story drags on farther than it should

The prose has become broken, the words misunderstood

It only takes two words to say, but a life to comprehend

The hardest part of living life is when we reach “The End”

I knew back when I started

That the end of days

Has always been as charted

There was no other way

I know there is no heaven

Awaiting in the sky

I know without question

That Heaven’s in your eyes

When I’m gone, between the stars

I know I won’t be very far

Because all that is left of me

Is your smile, your memory

When you hear a stupid pun

Or on mountain side you drive

Remember that we had some fun

And in those thoughts I’ll be alive
